Last night we brought in the New Year very quietly. I managed to stay awake past midnight to wish my family best wishes for the new decade. This is not an easy feat when you get up so early (5 a.m. yesterday). I had full intentions of pigging out, drinking beer and enjoying my last night of 2009, but you know what, none of that happened. Now I have a cupboard with some junk in it and a fridge with some beer in it. So now I will make sure that either Ron enjoys it or I throw it all out. Chances are good that Ron will be indulging.
I actually slept in this morning (Katie let me have a little more shut eye than our normal mornings) and then I proceeded to start “organizing” my binder and my Fitday goals. I cleared out the old to track the new. I threw in the mixings to split pea soup into the crock pot, juiced my veggies, and then finally made it down to the treadmill by noon. I only walked as I KNEW that I was going to attend the Hot Yoga session at 4 and I did not want to use up all my energy.
After the treadmill, I came up and drank a high protein shake, coming to about 300 calories. Then I hit my bedroom and started to organize it. I tend to get a bit messy around Christmas time because it is such a busy season and a lot of stuff just gets placed where it can fit.
Then at 3:30 I left to go to my first Hot Yoga session. When I got there I signed in,asked a few questions then looked where I could take off my winter coat. I could already feel how hot it was in the building. I made my way into the studio, found a little corner to lay my mat and towel down and then I laid down. I knew ahead of time to bring along a towel that was big enough to cover the mat and it is a good thing too. As I lay there, they had the humidity steam running and could feel it dropping on me and every once in awhile a cold drop of water would hit me. It was like lying in a sauna. I don’t do so well in heat so at that point I was already getting worried. My nose got all stuffy and I started sweating,…. just lying there. Man, what did I get myself into..
Then the instructor came in, turned off the steam, turned up the lights and we all got up. She started with a breathing exercise that I managed OK but knew I was going to have to modify things. From there, there are 26 poses they have you go through, and lastly another breath exercise. About the last 4 standing exercises, I had to stop because I was feeling faint and I didn’t want to pass out. It was the heat more than anything. I eventually sat down and watched the rest of the standing poses. Some of them, there was no way I could have done them anyway. Maybe once I get more flexible but certainly not today or anytime soon. I also noted that I was not the only one at this point that did not continue. There were a few people lying down at this point. I didn’t want to miss anything so I sat and watched…. while wiping the dripping water from my head.
The lying exercises, I could do most of them but they were hard. I definitely need to strengthen my back and this type of exercise would certainly help in that area. The lying poses had a 20 second meditation after each pose and while lying there my heart was just pounding. The amazing thing for me was that I did not have a headache. I did when I left the building as we are having a Chinook but inside that room with all that heat and steam, it was gone.
After the class, I made my way outside of the studio then sat on the bench trying to cool off. I felt like I was just hit by the Yoga Truck. I had no energy (and I was not the only one, all the first timers were there with me).
When I got home, I was pretty hungry, yet feeling a bit nauseous. But I knew I had to eat. Now looking at my food log for the day, I have not eaten enough, not at all and I must not do this. I must eat more food. As of right now (10 p.m.) I have only had 900 calories. This is an issue for me on the weekends and I need to fix it.
So would I go back?? You betcha. I know a few things now: I need to make sure I eat more during the day, and I need to wear less clothes. A LOT less clothes. Man I was soaking wet. My long hair was in a ponytail, and right now 6 hours later, it is still damp. I plan on attending the Sunday 4:00 p.m. session and will make sure I get a lot more nutrients into me beforehand. Hopefully I won’t be so tired during and after.
Right now I am just about dead and not at all interested in eating this late. I can see how this type of yoga is not for everyone but I am going to give it a couple more tries. I do feel good.
Hope you all had a fantastic day and made some good choices.
xxoo

I love yoga - hot, cold or inbetween! I did the same as you on New Year's eve thinking I would indulge in - whatever - and then I didn't. Good job on that. Besides, didn't you feel better yesterday?
ReplyDeleteI am going to try hot yoga one of these days.
